Unity feels impossible but it isn’t!
With God all things are possible (Matt 19:26).
We look at the vast diversity of the Christian landscape and wonder how on earth (literally) it could ever be united. It becomes easy to give up and when you give up you can easily do things that undermine unity because it isn’t going to happen anyway (be mean spirited, prideful, divisive yourself, etc)
But once you realize that unity is possible on some scale, because God can do anything, then you can start taking steps to see it happen all around you.
A few things to ponder:
- Just because two churches have different names on the sign doesn’t mean they are divided in reality.
- Just because two Christians believe different things, it doesn’t automatically mean they are divided.
- Just because two Christians worship differently doesn’t mean they aren’t united in Christ.
- Just because two Christians disagree doesn’t mean they must divide.
- Just because two churches don’t share the same building, leadership, or – organizational structure doesn’t mean they aren’t one.
- Just because you believe someone is wrong doesn’t mean you can’t love them, fellowship with them, or work alongside them.
- Just because unity isn’t perfect doesn’t mean unity isn’t real.
- Just because you inherited a division doesn’t mean you have to perpetuate it.
- Just because someone is outside your tradition doesn’t mean they are outside the body of Christ.
- Just because you can’t unite with everyone in every way doesn’t mean you can’t pursue unity with anyone in any way.
- Just because unity is difficult doesn’t mean division is justified.
- Just because you have convictions doesn’t mean you have to turn every conviction into a boundary of fellowship.
- Just because you disagree about what Scripture means doesn’t mean you disagree about the authority of Scripture.
- Just because someone reaches a different conclusion doesn’t mean they haven’t studied, prayed, or sincerely sought God.
- Just because Christians have divided in the past doesn’t mean we must remain divided in the future.
Unity already exists.
We just have a hard time accepting it.
