Who would have thought that this post on Putting God in a Box of Logic would have stirred this up. In the end it came to a pretty good conclusion but it took me over 12 responses to get some people to figure it out and get outside their presuppositions. I think some of them still don’t get it but that is okay too. I know I have presuppositions too! It is interesting if you work through some of the comments and see all the misunderstandings, misreadings, and miscommunications. We are funny people.

wow. you really stirred it up!
I’ve been studying CoC history lately and have come to the conclusion that to effectively discuss these subjects, we have to agree on what lens of interpretation we’re using.
The method for using the scriptures for the only guide is from a Baconian form of interpretation. Take data and deduce facts supported by evidence. This has become the standard way to interpret over the last 150 years.
Another way, which I believe is becoming more prevalent is what I would call “contextual.” Because we look for ways to make the Bible relevant to our culture, we read in a contextual style thus eliminating a strict, literal interpretation and using an overall message interpretation.
Usually, when comments go back and forth like the ones you witnessed, it’s because the writers do not start out with a baseline for how each is interpreting the scripture.
I say you stirred it; wow.
I once heard said that God created man in his own image and man, in his infinate wisdom, returned the favor.
wow, you are a hairy tick…..
I commend you on your perseverance, Matt.
