So we got a call at the church Tuesday by the “sheriff” of some county in West Virginia about a family who was stranded with two small children. He said they had broken down and that they were at a repair shop and couldn’t afford the repair. The family said they had visited here and named some street in St. Pete and some of the names of our ministers. They seemed to know us (thank you internet). It also seemed they were in trouble. You could hear the “shop owner” in the back calling then the “n-word” and these people said they were scared for their lives. They asked us to wire them $90 to cover the rest of their expenses so they could get out of there and get their kids to safety. Well, turns out it was a fraud. Just wanted to put this out there for those of you who are around church offices. Don’t help these guys.
I looked up “Gary Lewis”, who it was made out to and who must live in the DC area, and found he has been involved in numerous scams. The only reason I mention it here is that we have heard from another church where he has done the same thing this week so just didn’t want any of you to get scammed.
