I Want to Hear Your Story

Helped by this? Tell a Friend! ---->

In the previous post I told some of my story about my history with discipleship. One astute reader pointed out that I haven’t fully defined Discipleship yet. That is true. I will do that in an upcoming post. In the meantime please join in and tell us your experience or lack of experience with being discipled in the comments on this post. I want to hear *your* story. I want to understand where you are coming from. Share away!

  1. Matt! My wife and I were filled with The Holy Ghost May 21, 1976 and Baptized In Jesus Name May 23,1976! Like Cornelius Acts 10! Be Blessed Charles and Jean Kelly Memphis, Tenn. Acts 2:38

    1. God bless you and your wife Charles. Did you have any follow up to grow toward maturity after that? I am trying to listen to what people have experienced and would love to hear more.

  2. Matt,
If I had to put this in a category, it is in the category of lack of experience in being discipled. It is not specific, but based on general observation of my experience. I think church leadership needs to be careful to not fall into trap of thinking their most committed members/volunteers do not need to be discipled. I’m a deacon and I teach class on both Sundays and Wednesdays. My family is at church twice a week (we don’t have Sunday evening). I can’t recall the last time one of our elders had a conversation with me about the state of my “spiritual life.” Don’t neglect those who appear “faifthful” because of their activity in the congregation. They need nourishment as well, and maybe more because they are the ones who will be in a position to help you better disciple the whole congregation.

    1. That is a great observation and I think one that is so easy for leaders to do – assume that people who have been put in a leadership position don’t need any guidance. The irony is most of the elders I have been around hadn’t ever been discipled by someone either and they are in the ultimate leadership position. That isn’t a criticism, just an observation. I appreciate what you just wrote Brian!
