Reflections on My First 40 Years

A pivotal moment in our lives can happen any day of the year and any day of our lives. But there is something about a milestone that gets our attention. The milestones encourage us to reflect. They prompt our memories to dislodge moments that are otherwise nearly impossible to retrieve but are in the recesses of our minds under our consciousness.

I am turning 40 this week and that gives me a lot to reflect upon. If my life ended today I could die with a life well lived. There was always more that could have been risked. There were always move adventures I could have engaged in but all in all God has blessed me with a full life.

I am roughly ten years older than Jesus made it. I have reached the life expectancy of men in Jesus’ day. Everything from this point on is grace piled on top of grace.

We were going through some of my school work from the 5th grade a few days ago. Missy, the boys and I got a good laugh of all of the goofy things I had written in some daily journaling in elementary school. I explained what I had done in the summer. I also wrote about my ambitions and what I wanted to be when I grow up and how I wanted to be in real estate and be president. All of that happened but it just didn’t happen to me.

What I can say is that my dreams have not been fulfilled. My dreams were incomplete. I had no idea at 10 years old just how many great people would be in my life. I had no idea how many places I would get to go and things I would get to do.

The last 40 years have been a blast and I sense the next 40 are going to be even better. Thank you to all of the wonderful people in my life. I am truly a blessed man looking forward to another day or week or month or year or decade or beyond…whatever God will bless me with. It is all bonus!
