Equipping vs Teaching

If you want information, teach information. If you want equipping make sure that you do more than ask questions about what could be done. Instead, get together with your group and plan something together. Work on it. Come back together and discuss what happened.

I am convinced that much of our Bible class and adult ed programs in churches need to be changed more and more into faith labs where we learn, do and celebrate.

  1. Someone once asked me about teaching “the meat” of the word. I replied that I, more and more, regarded the “meat” as doing the word – in keeping with Jesus’ statement to his disciples, “My meat is to do the will of Him who sent me” (John 4).

  2. Now, there is a massive amount of information and example in the meat of the gospels. Those tend to be disregarded for yet another study of 1 Timothy or 1 Corinthians.

Also, please permit discussion in classes. Nothing ruins a class faster than banning discussion. Also, please don’t treat someone whose opinion is not the traditional one as a heretic.
