Leadership, Clarity and When To Plan the Fifth Step…

Helped by this? Tell a Friend! ---->

We often can’t see what will happen at step 5 until we are on step 3. But we often hesitate to take step 1 until we think we know what step 5 is. So go ahead and plan…be responsible and give it your best shot but also realize that step 5 cannot be seen clearly enough until you start on the first few steps that you do know. Only from the vantage point of steps 2-4 can you really see what step 5 has to be. Realize that the clarity you need usually does not entail seeing every single problem that could possibly arise. The clarity you need is often just seeing and moving on the next couple of obvious items and then seeing where things stand to make the next move.

  1. Sorry to be a downer on this Matt, but as soon as you take on the role of ‘leader’, you need to do a thorough job of risk assessment. I’ve read stories of people who followed your strategy and came to a tragic end. The literature of adventure sports like climbing is full of it. Only a few month ago I led a party of hill walkers into an unnecessarily dangerous descent by following the strategy of going so far (sample-and-see) before making further decisions. Thanks to God’s mercy we got away with it, but given that my pre-assessment wasn’t good enough, I’ve since made arrangements to go on a leadership refresher course. A big problem is that of the beetle on a beaker plant: is there a way back if it looks like you’re about to become part for the soup! Another is that you might be able to go the distance, but how about the people following you?
