Asserting Our Rights

Helped by this? Tell a Friend! ---->

We had a busy weekend…so busy that there was one event we had to drive separately to because Missy had to be at something else before that and we just couldn’t drive together. On the way home Missy was driving her car right in the right lane and I was in the left. I noticed the right lane would soon merge and there was a car in front of me in the left lane next to her. As she started to merge in front of him, he sped up to not let her in and she just squeaked by him in the last second to merge to the left lane. As she was trying to get over I was rooting for her…hoping she would make it! I couldn’t help but think how rude it was of that guy who didn’t seem to want to let her in and what a jerk that guy must be to act like that.

Then it dawned on me…there are times I am that guy in the left hand lane…not wanting to let people in. I rationalize it and say they knew the lane would end, they should have gotten over sooner. I make all sorts of excuses why I am right and they are wrong…but I finally realized that I am the jerk…that I really enjoy asserting my rights, my privileges…as if the road is mine and everyone should humble themselves around my vehicle.

The truth is, everyone out there is someone’s husband, wife, child, and grandmother. We should all be rooting for each other…cheering each other one…hoping that everyone makes it to their destination in one piece.

Psalm 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my thoughts.
See if there is any wicked[c] way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting.
