Sodom and Gomorrah Excavated?

A very interesting read over at The Sacred Page about a recent presentation at the Society of Biblical Literature. The archaeologists believe they have discovered the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and hint at what they believe the archaeological evidence their shows happened to those cities.

  1. Verrrrry interesting! It will be even more interesting to see what they have to say about the “heat event” that apparently wiped out these two cities.

Hi Matt, I’m surprised there are no further blogs on this to date. I read Stephen Collins’s book, ‘Discovering the City of Sodom’, and am convinced that he found what the Bible describes. His “heat event” potsherds are really impressive showing partial vitrification of unglazed clay vessels, requiring flash temperatures of several thousand degrees. I am sure he got the locations of the main cities correct, but I am not so sure about his thinking re the location of Zoar – it would have been better for him to have stuck with the method he used in finding the other cities, viz. matching Genesis descriptions to the topography. As far as I know he is currently in the middle of trying to determine whether the “heat event” can be explained away as a natural phenomenon, and I guess that brings out the problem of the paradigm-shift we seem to be living under. A century ago, most Christians would have been willing to accept the idea of angels forcing Lot to flee and shortly afterwards levelling the Plain of the Jordan with some kind of miraculous heat weapon; today, many (one hopes not a majority) would rather entertain the idea that an exploding comet or asteroid did the damage and a mythical legend sprung up as a cover story, which was then incorporated into holy records. What happened to faith in the Bible, belief in a Spiritual reality, and acceptance of the existence of messengers from the Heavens?

    Regards,
    Jim
