Well, according to some today is Judgment Day. It seems the only ones who will be judged today are those who are predicting today is the day. Why do people have the burning desire to further the image that Christians are nuts? It is really all about publicity more than it is about the truth. The Bible, which they claim to have studied intensely to come up with such a date, tells us it cannot be figured out. What is more the Harold Camping made at least one previous prediction…obviously it didn’t happen then either. But he assures us that this time is for real. Well, in some time zones it is currently May 22nd.

I’m observing that a lot of folks are fond of throwing around Matt. 24:36
“But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”
but are, in my opinion, guilty of the attitude found in 2 Pet 3:3-4:
“First of all you must understand this, that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts and saying, ‘Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since our ancestors died, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation!’ ”
Personally, I appreciate this guy for following through on his convictions and warning people to turn to God. The timing of the matter is only irrelevant if you are ready to meet your Maker. I see far more to criticize in the public reaction to this man’s predictions than in the predictions themselves.
Yes, he’s wrong about the timing. But he’s not wrong about the appropriate response to the ever-approaching end of all things. Think also of all the people who will die today. For them, it is quite literally judgment day. None of us are promised tomorrow.
I hate to sound gloomy, so I’ll end on this. I wish the end was today. While I am looking forward to the possibility of a pleasant life surrounded by the blessings and challenges that God sees fit to bring my way, I much more eagerly await the certainty of my eternal home with Jesus. When someone tells me the world ends today, I think my most sincere thought is, “Don’t I wish!”

I agree with what you said on so many fronts. The problem I have with this, though, is that once you discredit yourself on one front the whole message gets discredited in the eyes of others. So while he is right that people need to repent and turn to God, he continues the idea that people who talk like that are nuts when this day is here and then passes by but nothing changed. I just don’t find that helpful.
Wishing for everyone to die horribly and suffer just so we can get to heaven a little faster and more painlessly is… not a sentiment I am terribly comfortable with. And it’s so common. Do we realize how that sounds to people?
I do not sit around wishing for the end to occur. And stuff like this discredits Christianity. “Memento mori” works just as well at reminding people that the end can come for us all at any time, and is not a lie.
