Not a book about Jesus, God, or anything textual but a book on the current economic situation tops Christianbook.com’s book sales right now. The #1 best seller is by David Jeremiah and is called The Coming Economic Armageddon. Here is what his website says this book covers:
- Find answers to all the disturbing, dire financial news
- Did Bible prophecy predict the collapse of the housing market?
- Are there Biblical clues for recovery?
- Are these signs of the last days?
At #1 this shows you what Christians are interested in these days. It also shows that many value potential relevance over biblical accuracy. It doesn’t matter how relevant you try to be. If you use and abuse through an improper interpretation and framework of biblical prophesy to make the Bible say whatever you want it to say whatever relevance you hope for is lost.
I have not read this book and so I need to be careful in what I say about it. I am making assumptions based on the content of his website, which is pretty thorough, and the stated goals of this book and it is disturbing to me at best. It also makes me wonder how much like the world many Christians really are…should we really be worried about what the Bible has to say about the economy in 2010? Many would say yes. I would say the attempts I have heard to make those connection take the passages out of context and are very manipulative.

Very well put. I cringed the other day when I saw it in Barns and Nobles…which by the way makes me curious. This book is #1 on CBD’s list…I wonder what Barns and Nobles best selling Christian book is right now since they seem to attract a different sort of people, even to their religious section.

Ha…I just saw a picture of his t-shirt this morning. Funny stuff.
I don’t know much about Dr. Jeremiah’s latest book, but he preached a great series on the beatitudes a number of years ago. It was good enough that I ordered the tapes. I’ve always appreciated him, even when I have not seen eye-to-eye with him on eschatology.
It reminds me of the time I preached on what the Bible says about the end times and what it meant to people over time only to get someone who offered me a host of places to go so that I would know. Jesus words that no one would didn’t seem to deter them at all.
I read or heard recently but can’t remember where that the number one concern of those who identify as evangelical Christians is the economy.
