Does Blogging Promote Spiritual Maturity?

I have found a lot of joy in blogging over the past couple of years. It is fun to “meet” people from all over the world. It is interesting to get opinions from a wide variety of backgrounds. Now there are even such things as blogging luncheons and awards taking place from time to time. I could list a lot of other fun components of blogging but the question that crosses my mind is whether or not blogging actually promotes spiritual maturity. I think the answer is different for each of us.

When it comes to blogging I think you get what you are looking for. If you are looking for a fight you can certainly find it. If you are looking for spiritual meat to digest you can find that to. If you are looking to encourage or be encouraged that is out there. If you are looking for a laugh you can certainly find it through the thousands of funny blogs out there. But what about Christian maturity? I wonder how many people are looking for it. I think there are quite a few. I believe that if that is what we are searching for that is what we will find. There are a number of blogs that can help us move in that direction. Just like with food, the kinds of food we consume will ultimately result in the health or unhealthiness of our bodies, the kinds of blogs we read can contribute to our spiritual maturity or distract from it.

While I don’t think we need a steady diet of heavy hitting, deeply rooted theological blogs in our feed readers and inboxes, I think it helps to have some in the mix. Here are a few blogs I think can help you grow toward spiritual maturity that you may want to consider subscribing to:

  1. Jim Martin’s God Hungry Blog
  2. Bill Williams’ Spiritual Oasis
  3. Danny Dodd’s Adventures in Preaching
  4. Ben Witherington’s Blog
  5. Keith Brenton’s Blog In My Own Eye
  6. John Piper’s Desiring God
  7. John Alan Turner’s Faith 2.0
  8. Frank Bellizzi’s Frankly Speaking
  9. Jay Guin’s One in Jesus
  10. Bobby Valentine’s Stoned-Campbell Disciple
  11. Tim Spivey’s Blog
  12. Zach Cox’s Zachnostic Blog
  13. Nick Gill’s Fumbling Towards Eternity
  14. Brian Stevenson’s Blog
  15. Tim Archer’s Kitchen of Half-Baked Thoughts
  16. Trey Morgan’s Blog

Has blogging helped you grow as a Christian? If so, how? And what blogs would you recommend to someone who wanted to grow deeper in their faith?

  3. John,

Thanks for stopping in. I was in family Christian yesterday and saw your book on the 52 Greatest Stories of the Bible right there on a table by the front door. This is such a great book. It reminded me that I need to talk about it more here on the blog. Thanks for putting such a great resource together.

  4. Thanks for the tip-of-the-hat, Matt. I’ve been a bit busy the past few months and just noticed this link. I’m humbled and honored to be listed here with some of my favorite bloggers. May God continue to richly bless your labors in the Vineyard. -bill
