The 50 year old parquet floors are torn out and the old 1950’s glue is pretty much scrapped flat. In the morning I will start putting the new hardwood down. If I ever, ever mention another house project here on the blog I want you all to do one thing for me. Tell me not to do it! I get into these things and it is always five times harder than I guessed. Scrapping out 500 square feet of nasty black glue that is rock hard is no easy task. My hands, legs, back, and arms feel like they are at least 100 years old. It is really a shame the parquet wasn’t in better shape.

Too late! It is about 2/3 done and it should be completed tomorrow. Here is the breakdown:
Thursday morning – tore out carpet and started pulling out the old parquet through Thursday night.
Friday morning – Realized the prep was too much work. Went to H.D. and rented a power scrapper thingy that made the scrapping of the old glue only take 18 hours instead of 60.
Friday evening – Still prepping the floor.
Saturday – Prepped the floor until 1:00. Started laying hardwood at 1:00. We got about 5 rows (20+ feet long) done between 1:00 and 9:00.
Sunday afternoon – continued laying hardwood until LIFE group at 5:30. Began into the hallway and hall closet.
Sunday night – Finished laying the living room and got into the dining room from 8:00 to 10:00.
Tomorrow – looks like it will be done! Then the house will have to be cleaned and as some point I will have to redo the quarter round.
I have some of the best friends in the world. Two men from church, Bob and Al have helped me through this without me even asking them. They have been with me through each of the above mentioned days. Without them this would have taken many, many times longer and much more money. I am blessed to have friends who are willing to give up days on end because they want to. I was just about in tears tonight as they left because I was so grateful.

I feel your pain and understand. It itook 3 people with machete sharp scrapers 3 days to lift those off my kitchen floor when we remodeled. The squares broke off into shards that could potentially kill someone. And the black glue residue…don’t get me started. Matt – we have done almost everything to our house that you have done…the difference…we hired professionals to do it 🙂 Be careful and stay whole.
