I have to brag on our 20 and 30 somethings a little. Saturday we had a devotional with record attendance (50) and Sunday we had volleyball on the beach after AM worship and had about 35 show up. What I am most proud about is I had absolutely nothing to do with planning these events. They planned it, they lined it up, they organized it, and we broke records.
Our Sunday morning Bible class is working through Dan Kimball’s They Like Jesus But Not the Church material. The material is open and honest. It asks tough questions. But the thing is these young people relate to it. They know people just like the people in the interviews and they want to reach out to them but don’t always know how. This material opens the door for those conversations to start and to examine our own insulation from the world. It encourages us to make better contacts outside of the church and love people because people are important to God. Kimball encourages us to change the world’s stereotypes about Christians and I find it very refreshing. We also showed the Cardboard testimony video (below) to get people ready for DVD Session 2. The cardboard testimony video is so powerful because it reminds us that none of us are perfect and that God really can make a difference in people’s lives.

Effective for sure but is it scriptural for people to use cardboard cutouts during worship?
Uh oh…they didn’t have cardboard in the first century so I guess that was a sin. And the Bible also doesn’t authorize us to use a disease like M.S. to help evangelize. I guess that is a sin too. 😛
They didn’t have cardboard but they did have small tablets.

Wow, that was weird. I just got off the phone with my sister and she was telling me about this new thing they were going to do at their church involving “cardboard cutouts.” I immediately stopped her to let her know “Matt Dabbs already beat you to the punch!”
I don’t understand, two people in the span of an hour today talking about “cardboard cutouts.” Weird.
When I think saw the video I immediately thought it was a reprise of Bob Dylan’s video for Subterranean Blues.
