There is so much talk about the need to have a personal relationship with God. Have you ever stopped to think about the fact that when God spoke to and worked through individuals in the Bible it was rarely just about that one person. When God called a prophet, a priest was given his duties, or a king was put on the throne it was never about just that person. When you read the content of God’s conversations with Moses there is little emphasis on Moses’ relationship with God and more on the community at large’s relationship with God. Does God want a relationship with you? Of course he does but if we boil it all down to just Him and me we have really missed something valuable – the importance of being a part of the community of God. We have ended up with a generation, as many have pointed out, who love Jesus but dislike the church. That is unfortunate and needs to be reversed.

Wonderful post brother.
I personally believe that Christianity is about having a personal reationship with God and His son Jesus Christ.
I think from the very beginning God wanted that personal relationship with us and only through Jesus Christ can we be brought back into that intended relationship. We need to cherish it more than anything else. We need to understand the creator of the universe desires to have a personal relationship with us. Notice and I have noticed in the end that Jesus tell the crowd in the gospel that many people will do this and that in the name of Jesus and claim it on the day of judgement yet Jesus will say, “I NEVER KNEW YOU!” I tell you what Matt, I want on that day for Jesus to say he knows me and more so that I know Him.

Could you come tell my church family that seem to miss this point. How much stronger and effective the churches could be if we would grasp this concept. I have always said that the Devils chief tool is religion. Seems Jesus knew what he was praying for when he asked for unity. You spark a question in me when you talk about what has been sparked in this generation. Does Jesus then change…or the church? Seems the traditions are fanning the spark, but I am not worried, God is in charge!

Thanks for your input. It is the church’s responsibility to conform to the will of God and not the other way around.
This is an example of what happens when we accept the language and thinking of the religious world, instead of what the scriptures teach. We miss aspects of the truth. The fact is that there is no relationship with Christ outside the body of Christ. Christ often put our service to Him in terms of serving others, (In that you visited me when sick, a cup of cold water, etc.) and never envisioned an entirely private, separated relationship with Him. Someone focused entirely on a “personal relationship” with Christ might miss that.
