Baptists Working Together to Repair a “Damaged Brand”

Helped by this? Tell a Friend! ---->

A very good friend of mine and fellow blogger Philip Cunningham (who by the way still hasn’t switched to WordPress 😉 ) sent me this link from msnbc on a Baptist Covenant and cooperation that is being pushed by Jimmy Carter and several other politicians (eg Bill Clinton and Al Gore) in an effort to soften the image of the Baptist church by getting back to the core of who they are. With so much division, arguments, and divisiveness it is nice to see someone is making an effort to appeal to those things about our faith that draw us together rather than those that push us apart. Have a read and let us know what you think about this effort.

And when you get a moment have a look at Philip’s blog. He has been posting some really good stuff lately. God bless,

Matt

  1. I’m curious at what is at the heart of this. Political ambition? That is, having a voice right before Super Tuesday? Self-Righteous Identification Marking? “At least we’re better than those legalistic Southern Baptists…” Or an authentic attempt at bettering oneself? Or a little bit of all of them?

I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt. And I appreciate their emphases on social justice & being more ecumenical. The spirit of this current age is very receptive to those two messages. Communicating that those values are in fact Godly is a good thing, I think.

Thanks for posting this. I look forward to seeing what other folks think.
