2 Timothy 2:2 and Evaluating Successful Discipleship

Jesus was the best disciple-maker who ever lived. Paul has to be right behind him. One of Paul’s main disciples was Timothy. Paul believed he was showing people, by his example, how to follow Jesus (1 Cor 11:1).

2 Timothy 2:2 is a key verse in knowing if our efforts are bearing fruit, reproduced fruit. That is key. We don’t just want one generation to make disciples of the next and it stops there. Each generation must do this for the next. Here is what Paul wrote,

“And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”

Paul teaches Timothy who teaches reliable people who teach others. Four generations. This is common thinking in disciple-making circles – successful disciple-making movements can show four+ generations of disciples who made disciples who made disciples who made disciples. This is what the early church did. If they didn’t, we wouldn’t be here. If we don’t, where will the church be in 50 years?

Many methods of disciple making are designed to be two generational. One person gets one on one with another to disciple them but the person being discipled doesn’t have a clue how to reproduce this or pass it along.

DNA is meant to be passed along. When the church lacks reproducible disciple-making in its DNA decline is inevitable. I pray for the day when I can stand alongside three+ other Christians who have all discipled each other. That day is coming, Lord willing, because I am going to keep at this until the fruit is evident in a reproducible way.
