Christ & Culture: Suggestions?

Helped by this? Tell a Friend! ---->

I am putting together a list of topics for a Bible class on Christ and Culture. This will basically be a class on Contemporary Christian Ethics. The topics I have considered so far are as follows:

  • Commercialism/Materialism
  • Government/Taxes/Politics [have to be really careful here]
  • Family & Friends
  • Entertainment
  • Culturally defined beauty/body image/fashion

If you were to teach a class on that which other things would you include?

  1. I think some bioethics stuff could be cool here. Euthanasia and Abortion are two sides of the same coin that you might could play off of. If my body is not my own, do I have the right to do whatever I want with it? Perhaps stem cell research falls within that same arena. What am I allowed/not allowed to do with my body?

Sounds like some good stuff. Keep us informed on how the class goes.

  2. I must say I am excited that churches of Christ are really looking into deeper issues like this after so many years of empty legalism. I attend the 4th ave church of Christ in Franklin, TN and it is good that we are discussing things like this and actually doing something about it. Have you read Lee Camp’s book “Mere Discipleship”? I think it would provide lots of good info.

As a suggestion, I know it often seems like a thing of the past but Racism is still a very real issue that the church must face. Along with that, any kind of discrimination and perhaps even nationalism.

  3. Hey Matt,

Yes, I’m looking forward to being with you for a singing/worship workshop. Do they have seafood in Florida? 🙂

I was reading Dusty Rush’s blog this morning and it reminded me of the challenge we have in being the last ones to acknowledge and tackle racism. It puzzles me why the church doesn’t take the lead.

  4. Thank you all for the feedback. I nearly have the list finalized. I will keep you posted.

    Rhonda,

Nice to have you stop by. Good luck with your study. Good women’s material is lacking. I have looked at Beth Moore’s material and while I know MANY good things have come from it I am still not satisfied with it. I hope I don’t sound negative when I say this but I just feel like with a few tweaks her material could be even more amazing.

    Keith,

That one is certainly on the list. Thank you for bringing it up!
